Become a Strong Leader!

 Orville Campbell, MD

What is a leader? Or should I ask, what is a strong or good leader? A strong or good leader is a vibrant person who is a people magnet. In other words, people are drawn to individuals who have the personal package of confidence; love for people; desire to help people; knowledgeable; problem-solver; being an intelligent risk taker; creative/out of the box thinker; self-motivator; and integrity.

Becoming a good leader requires one to drain him or her of selfishness and jealousy. A leader likes to see others achieve and gives them positive reinforcement. A leader is quick to allocate praise to others. Empower people! A selfish and jealous leader destroys his or her leadership and breeds discontent among team members.

The real high for the true leader is not recognition but watching the success unfold for those who he or she has mentored and taught. The strong leader is almost obsessed with mentoring, teaching, and serving others. Recognition will seek and find a good leader just as sure as the sun rises every morning.

A truly strong leader is one who is knowledgeable. However, you can only become knowledgeable if you prepare. You should possess and continually update a reading list. Books (including audio) and magazines should constantly be at your disposal. Never travel without reading or audio materials. Are you in your car a lot? Use your CD player for educational purposes (Auto College). Never cease to take courses to gain new knowledge or to refresh you. Constantly sharpen your skills and feed your mind with relevant knowledge. Personal growth never ceases.

A true leader is a person of integrity. Always do the right thing and the rest will take care of itself. Yes, good guys do win. It is not what is popular or politically correct that matters, it is what is right! Do what is right and lead by example not by what you say. Practice what you preach. Walk the Walk! Stand up for what is right or for others who can’t stand up for themselves even if it means a confrontation.

A good leader is a person who is confident in his or her leadership and is decisive. There is not continual second guessing. Because of this confidence, a true leader uses creativity and is an “out of the box” thinker. Do your research and be decisive based on your data. Never shoot from the hip.

A strong leader rids him or her of negative influences such as negative persons. Negative people will rob you of your dreams and energy and weigh you down like trying to swim with your legs in hardened concrete. They are a cancer on our team or in your personal life. Cut them Out! Furthermore, a true leader must keep his mind and abilities sharp; so, there is no room for drug, alcohol, or any other substance abuse.

A truly powerful leader is one who is a problem-solver. This kind of leader is not a whiner or someone who looks at the pile of problems and winces. Research the problem, plan, sharpen your abilities, set clear objectives and goals, and plot a clear and unwavering course for your team. Then, LEAD!

A strong leader must use time wisely. Don’t waste your time or let undisciplined people waste your time. If an appointment or meeting is 9:00 AM, so it is. Then, 9:02 AM is unacceptable. Plan your time wisely and stick to your guns.

A true leader loves people and has a deep-seated desire to help people succeed. If a leader does not have this love for people and desire to help them, it is difficult to truly lead and he or she is probably leading for selfish reasons. Is that person leading for power, recognition or to be on the “A” list? It has been said that if you help others get what they want then you will eventually get what you want.

A strong leader is a dreamer. However, the strong leader doesn’t stop at dreaming. He or she will take stock of his resources, plan, sharpen his abilities, plot a course, and ACT!

Whole Food Vitamins - What is Vital Nutrients?

Whole foods provide vital vitamins and minerals for the body. These vitamins and minerals support every system of the body to perform critical life sustaining functions. Listed below are some of these functions.

#1
Help to fight infections such as bacteria and viruses. This is accomplished by boosting the function of germ killer cells in the immune system. The immune system can be weakened by high stress and prolonged high cortisol states, diabetes, obesity, chronic kidney diseases, etc. Respiratory and urinary infections depend on such help.

#2
Vitamin D and trace minerals are essential to strong bones and the prevention of osteoporosis which is weak and thin bones due to poor laying down of essential minerals. Vitamin D also helps to prevent anemia in patients with chronic kidney disease. Vitamin D helps to regulate calcium and phosphorous balance in the body. It also helps the body absorb calcium and magnesium. If your vitamin D is low, you may have a magnesium and calcium deficiency.

#3
Help to neutralize or rid the body of toxins that build up daily. These toxins can be cancer causing and weaken the immune system.

#4
Help the body to absorb and digest foods.

#5
Help to promote thriving probiotics (good bacteria in your colon or gut).

#6
B12 and folate help to prevent anemia. They are necessary to maintain our sense of touch, position, vibration, pain and temperature awareness. Folate is well known to help prevent nervous system birth defects in the unborn. B12 is best absorbed complexed with other B Vitamins.

#7
B3 helps to keep our cholesterol level in check.

#8
Vitamin K helps to keep us from bleeding to death when we are injured.

#9
Help enzymes perform the body’s essential physiologic functions. Enzymes are proteins that facilitate vital bodily functions.

#10
Help to maintain healthy skin and hair. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies speed up the aging process of the hair and skin.

In my medical practice, I am presented with many choices of vitamins. Most are not whole food vitamins. So, I will not use or recommend them to my patients. There is a whole food supplement that I have come across called Vital Nutrients. It is made by a company called Cyberwize. It is 100 percent whole food and provides 100 percent of the recommended daily allowances. The labeling meets my strict criteria. The whole food source for the vitamins are listed. These are not synthetic (made in the lab) vitamins. Some of the sources include: Strawberries, raspberries, wild yam, okra, apples, concord grape, oat bran, red bell pepper, oranges, pomegranates, beets, watermelon, etc.

Everyone needs to make sure they obtain 100 percent of the daily recommended allowances of vitamins and minerals from whole foods. Since most of us do not, a whole food supplement is critical.

Health Insurance Companies: Their Abuse and Tricks, Part One

There is little or no doubt that the Health Insurance Industry has a strangle hold on doctors and other healthcare providers and the delivery of healthcare. There may be little hope as a significant number of these health insurance companies get richer and richer; their buildings get taller and taller and they become more powerful political lobbyists. CEO’s may command six or even seven figure salaries. In a significant number of cases, bonuses grow and flourish as life-saving or health preserving medicines and care are denied.  This series of articles will focus on the abuse inflicted on healthcare providers and the healthcare system by a significant number of health Insurance companies. “The nation’s HMOs reported a $3.6 billion profit for the first three months of 2005, representing a $646 million, or 21.4 percent, increase over the $3.0 billion earned during the first quarter of 2004,” according to Weiss Ratings, Inc. (http://www.weissratings.com/News/Ins_HMO/20051024hmo.htm).

Abuse #1:  Pre-existing Condition.

Patient walks into a doctor’s office to be seen and he or she presents his or her health insurance card. The staff verifies insurance coverage and / or obtains a valid referral (permission) from the insurance company to see the patient. The patient is seen to take of the concerning health problem. The insurance company is billed. The doctor’s claim for payment is denied. Pre-existing condition is the reason given by the insurance company.  In other words this condition started before (pre-existed) the insurance coverage. However, a doctor cannot know this unless he or she first sees the patient and takes a history. The doctor or other healthcare provider may never get payment. The patient despite paying premiums may get stuck with the bill. The insurance company pockets this money. The fight is on. Guess who usually wins, the company in that 20 or 40 story plush corporate office building that has enough red tape to tie up the healthcare provider for months to come. Guess who usually gives up.

Example: I was asked to consult on a hospitalized patient because she was passing blood and in pain due to a kidney stone. Imagine my surprise when my claim for payment was denied for pre-existing condition. The insurance company claimed that the stone was pre-existing!

Abuse #2: Referral or Prior Authorization

It is my opinion that the practice of insurance companies mandating that healthcare providers get special permission (referrals or prior authorizations) should be banned. These referrals or prior authorizations may be imposed on a healthcare provider before he or she can give a patient a health preserving medicine, diagnostic test, hospitalization or even an office visit.  Referrals or prior authorizations in too many cases delay care and may place a patient’s health in jeopardy. They are barriers to care and in many cases are used as weapons to deny care in order to line the pockets of the insurance company. Isn’t it silly to think that healthcare providers who have spent many years in training and are indeed experts can’t determine on their own if a patient needs to be seen or is in need of a medicine or test.

Example: A patient presented to my office just after closing. I had seen her in consultation in the past for uncontrolled high blood pressure. She was not feeling well and she complained that her blood pressure “was up”. The insurance company was closed so we could not get a referral number. I obviously saw the patient and administered medicine to reduce her blood pressure. She felt better. I also prevented a needless emergency room visit. The next day we called the insurance company to explain our situation and they said they would deny our claim since we saw her without permission.

Healthcare providers and patients must speak up and demand that our elected officials make health insurance industry reform a priority.

Whole Food Vitamins and Tunguska Blast!

 By Orville Campbell, MD

Whole Foods: How They Relate to Vitamins, Minerals, and Adaptogens

Whole foods are foods in their natural state. They contain vitamins, minerals and adaptogens in the most usable form. The body loves this all natural form. Most of us do not eat enough servings of whole foods everyday; so we need to take a vitamin. That supplement should be a whole food vitamin. We also need to take an adaptogen supplement.

The Best Vitamin for the Body

Vitamin supplements are needed to help the body fight infection, cancer, and other diseases. They are vital to assisting enzymes in the body in breaking down and absorbing foods. They are even needed to make sure your blood has the correct thinness or thickness. Still, they are needed to maintain our sense of temperature, touch, pain, and vibration.

Your body prefers to absorb vitamins and other nutrients from natural or whole foods. Therefore, most health and wellness experts agree that whole food sources of vitamins and minerals and other nutrients are superior. Synthetic (made up in a lab) may mimic but will not be superior or be as good as natural. Your body will absorb and utilize the whole food vitamins more than synthetic.

The fewer additives or fillers the better: then there will be fewer opportunities for allergic reactions. The supplement market is very competitive; the better the quality the better and more prominent the labeling stating such. If your supplement is whole food, then the label should indicate such. The food source should be given for each vitamin component. The label should indicate regarding certification. Vague labels with minimal information are strong indicators of lower quality.

Find out if your vitamin is made by a company with rigorous quality control standards that are validated by a third party certification provider such as the NSF or ISO. Your vitamin needs to be NSF or ISO certified. Why would you take any dietary or nutrition supplement made by a company without one of these certifications? NSF certification for example assures the consumer that the product has been tested and will continue to be tested through periodic audits. In other words, the certification of a product is continuous, not a one time process. The product should have the high quality ingredients and manufacturing process that a company claims.

Free Radicals

Your body constantly produces charged and toxic substances called free radicals. The more illnesses one has the more free radical production. Disease states such as cardiovascular disease, obesity, stress, high blood pressure, and diabetes propel such production. Free radicals promote aging and tissue damage in blood vessels and organs.

Adaptogens

Adaptogens are substances that help the body to neutralize or destroy these free radicals, while helping to energize the body and support its systems. They help the body to properly function physiologically. Such functions include aiding in digestion, ridding the body of toxins and free radicals, and supporting many other body systems such as: neurological (better function of nerves; memory support, improved stress management and feeling of well being); respiratory; muscle-bones (especially helping muscles to naturally bulk up and use oxygen in a more efficient manner), urinary (helping to prevent urinary tract infection for example); and immune (helping those cells in this system to fight infections and cancer). Whole foods are rich in adaptogens. However, most people do not ingest enough whole foods to obtain the much needed adaptogens, vitamins, and minerals. A supplement rich in adaptogens is also needed.

Tunguska Blast or TBlast

As a physician I use several supplements. One that I am especially pleased is Tunguska Blast (also called TBlast). This is a dietary supplement made by a company called Cyberwize. I use it to support my immune and nervous systems. My favorite use of this supplement is to obtain the energy and stamina it imparts to me. I try not to refer to it as a juice because juice implies that the product is obtained by just juicing fruits. This is a nutrition supplement that is rich in adaptogens. It has ten plant based adaptogens.

The source of these adaptogens is from plants harvested from the Tunguska River Valley in Russia. A few of these adaptogens are Eleuthero root (used to be called Siberian Ginseng), Licorice root, Chinese Magnolia (Schizandra Chinensis), and Golden root (Rhodiola Rosea).

The notable adaptogen, Eleutherococcus, supports better oxygen utilization by muscles. Rhaponticum Carthamoides can further enhance physical performance by supporting the increase in muscle mass. Why harm the body with anabolic steroids when they are natural muscle builders? Sorbus Aucuparia is an adaptogen that can enhance the body’s ability to prevent vitamin C deficiency.

Tunguska Blast comes in two liquid forms: Regular strength and a concentrate or extract. The regular strength comes in a 2 oz travel size or a 32 oz size. The extract can easily be placed in a purse or small personal item bag.

Finally

Start a whole food vitamin and adaptogen supplement today. Give your body the assistance it needs to fight free radicals, more rapid aging, disease states, infection and cancer causing toxins. Given today’s high stress and fast paced lifestyles, your body needs these supplements to help ward off stress, high cortisol states which can lead to more weight gain and may even increase your chances of having diabetes and high blood pressure.

Tunguska Blast is a powerful dietary supplement rich in 10 Vital Plant Adaptogens. It will help with stress management, promote stamina and energy as well as support the immune system and multiple other bodily systems. Read more or Get Tunguska Blast Today!

 Buy Vital Probiotic
Live Microbial Food Supplement to Aid in Optimal Health
Vital Probiotic assists in restoring the body to its natural state of balance in a world where life is often lived out of balance. Stress is to blame for much of the probiotic depletion. Probiotics are also diminished by strong antibacterial herbs, cortisone, carbonated drinks, laxatives, birth control pills, and lack of sleep. Courses of antibiotics, poor diet, toxins in the bloodstream, and the natural course of aging further rob the body of the flora it needs. Vital Probiotic helps bring the body to optimal health by ensuring the balance of “friendly bacteria” necessary to full function of the body’s “second immune system”

What is Tunguska Blast or TBlast?

 By Orville Campbell, MD

When one uses a natural dietary or nutrition supplement make sure it is rich in adaptogens and antioxidants and can help support the immune system and may be even help you manage your physical and mental stress. Pay close attention to the ingredients. Artificial colors should be a no no! Avoid corn starch.

Adaptogens are herbal or plant substances that help to energize the body, support the immune and nervous systems. They also help the body to adapt to physical and mental steress or internal or external stressors. A few of these adaptogens are Eleuthero root (used to be called Siberian Ginseng), Licorice root, Chinese Magnolia (Schizandra Chinensis), and Golden root (Rhodiola Rosea).

Dietary or nutrition supplements are just that. They supplement your diet and healthy lifestyle. They do not reverse unhealthy lifestyles or the abuse some may inflict on their body. They are not treatments or cures. Anyone making treatment or cure claims should be cautioned regarding doing so. High quality, natural supplements should be used with the knowledge of your healthcare provider. If you are on medication, discuss any potential supplement-medication interaction with your healthcare provider.

As a physician I use several supplements. One that I am especially pleased is Tunguska Blast or TBlast for short. This is a dietary supplement made by a company called Cyberwize. I use it to support my immune and nervous systems. My favorite use of this supplement is to obtain the energy and stamina it imparts to me. I try not to refer to it as a juice because juice implies that the product is obtained by just juicing fruits. This is a nutrition supplement rich antioxidants and adaptogens.  As a matter of fact, Tunguska Blast is rich in 10 plant based adaptogens! As you may remember from a previous article of mine, antioxidants are neutralizers of free radicals. Free radicals are charged particles your body generates in disease (e.g. high blood pressure, obesity, cancer, etc.) and stress states. Free radicals promote aging and tissue damage in blood vessels and organs.

Lotions - What You Must Know Before You Put It On

 By Orville Campbell, MD

Your skin is indeed the largest organ of your body. It is over 60% water. The skin helps the body to: maintain temperature; make vitamin D; perceive certain sensations (such as touch, cold, heat, pain, etc.); and eliminate waste products and toxins. Still, the skin serves as a major line of defense or barrier against infection. In many cases, the skin readily absorbs what is applied to it. This includes toxins. Some lotions contain multiple toxins that can inflame the skin and increase your risk for various cancers.

One has to be extremely careful regarding what is applied to the skin such as lotions, soaps, creams, balms, and even water. We will consider the issues regarding body lotions. A significant number of lotions contain what are considered toxins. Still, some lotions contain lubricants that clog healthy pores and lessen their ability to rid the body of waste products and accumulated toxins.

Potentially Harmful Agents in Your Lotions

Avoid lotions and other cosmetic products with these chemicals: Triethanolamine (TEA) which can inflame the skin; Aluminum which is a heavy metal; Sodium Lauryl Sulfate which can be detrimental to hair follicles and hair growth; Paba (p-aminobenzoic acid) which can cause skin inflammation; Glycols such as ethylene glycol have the potential to be carcinogenic; Hydantoin DMDM can be carcinogenic in some laboratory animals; and DEA (diethanolamine) can cause skin inflammation and is potentially carcinogenic. DEA can be found in brake fluid and antifreeze. FD & C and D & C dyes also share such potential. Mineral oil and petroleum products can clog healthy pores in prevent the skin from eliminating toxins. There are numerous other agents; however, these are some common agents to avoid. These compounds are readily absorbed by your skin.

What is a Quality and Natural Lotion?

A quality lotion will have natural fragrances such as lemongrass, lavender, and orange oils. Your lotion should also have natural lubricants such as sweet almond and citronella oils. You want plant-based ingredients. Avoid lotions with synthetic compounds, synthetic fragrances, and artificial colors. These agents can inflame the skin (dermatitis) and can increase your risk for various cancers.

Use Natural lotions, soaps and other personal care products without the toxins. See these plant based personal care products (botanicals):

Whole Food Vitamins: 5 Basic Truths

 By Orville Campbell, MD

HealthyWize Banner

Whole food vitamins are superior to synthetic (lab derived) vitamins because they are in a more natural form and can be more readily utilized by your body. Whole foods are foods in a natural state, meaning unprocessed or unrefined. Quality will cost you. All natural tends to cost more. Make sure your vitamins are NSF or ISO certified. There are 5 Basic Truths you should know about your vitamins supplements.

#1 Certification

Better quality whole food vitamins will have NSF or ISO certification.

#2 Most People Need a Vitamin

Most People need to take vitamins. Unless you have the recommended daily amounts of fruits and vegetables per day, you most likely need a supplement. In our fast pace world, a lot of the foods individuals eat are polished or overly processed. As a general rule of thumb, 3 servings of fruits and vegetables daily should be eaten. Look at your plate and the plates of those around you. Are those plates colorful with fruits and vegetables or are do they lack color because of all the starch and meat?

#3 Source of Flavors and Colors

The source of the flavoring and colors of your supplement should be from natural sources. No artificial dyes or flavoring should spoil your vitamin.

#4 Truth in Labeling

The fewer additives or fillers the better: then there will be fewer opportunities for allergic reactions. The supplement market is very competitive; the better the quality the better and more prominent the labeling stating such. If your supplement is whole food, then the label should indicate such. The food source should be given for each vitamin component. The label should indicate regarding certification. Vague labels with minimal information are strong indicators of lower quality.

#5 Cost

Don’t ever select a vitamin based solely on price point. There are significant reasons why one vitamin is cheaper than the other. When you decide on what is an acceptable quality, then comparison shop for that similar quality vitamin so you are comparing oranges with oranges and apples with apples. Watch out for companies with well recognized names who have purchasing power. Read the label even more. Remember, quality will cost you. But, what is the monetary value of good health? I don’t think anyone can quantify that.

Start a whole food vitamin today. These supplements are needed to help the body fight infection, cancer, and other diseases. They are vital to assisting enzymes in the body in breaking down and absorbing foods. Vitamins are even needed to make sure your blood has the correct thinness or thickness. Still, vitamins are needed to maintain our sense of temperature, touch, pain, and vibration.

Vitamin B12 - The Gift Of Health

 By Orville Campbell, MD

B12 helps your body to make life giving blood. A decrease in your red blood cell count is called anemia. Anemia can cause fatigue or poor energy and cravings for certain things such as ice. However, make sure your iron and RBC (red blood cell) folate levels are normal.

This vitamin can help one to maintain a good memory, achieve or maintain better focus, mental clarity and achieve a feeling of well-being or positive mood. Your entire nervous system can benefit from this supplement. B12 is vital to maintain the nervous system in excellent working order.

This vitamin has been called energy in a bottle; because, it imparts energy, stamina, and vitality to those who take it. For best results/absorption, one should take b12 with other B complex vitamins, such as B1 (Thiamin), B2 (Riboflavin), B3 (Niacin), and B6 (Pyridoxine).

B12 applied to the skin (topically) may improve certain skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis and may be even psoriasis.

For individuals with kidney disease and on epogen (a medicine to prevent significant anemia), it can help to make the epogen more effective. Therefore, less medicine may be required. However, make sure your iron and RBC (red blood cell) folate levels are normal. These patients are especially prone to iron deficiency due to the reduced life expectancy of their red blood cells.

This supplement is helpful in protecting an unborn child from developing birth defects such as those defects affecting the spine.

This vitamin provides support to the immune system and promotes proper functioning. It helps to decrease the inflammatory state of an inflamed immune system.

B12 has been shown to lower homocysteine levels. An elevated homocysteine level has been associated (not causal) with stroke, heart disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s dementia. This implication is very exciting and promising.

This Christmas or holiday season, give the gift of health and wellness such as vitamin B12. Give gifts that impart health to prolong quality life.
