Expert Tips from A Doctor to Lose Weight and Keep it Off

Lose Weight Naturally - Adaptogens - Change Lifestyle

There are so many suggestions out there to lose weight and it’s hard to separate facts from myths. Here are some tips from a physician to help you to lose weight but most of all keep it off.

http://www.ClaimWellness.com

Tip #1 Calculate Your Metabolic Rate

Use a metabolic calculator to help you figure out your daily metabolic rate. This rate is an estimate of your body’s daily metabolism and will tell you how many calories you generally burn on a daily basis given your activity level. The older you are the slower your metabolic rate. The more inactive or sedentary you are the lower your rate. The more muscle mass you have the higher the metabolic rate. The more over your ideal body rate the slower your metabolism.

Tip #2 Exercise is a Must

You must exercise. Optimal frequency is 3 to 5 times per week. This is one of the best ways to increase your metabolic rate or burn more calories, even when you are resting. Do not let anyone fool you. This is a critical component to lose weight and to keep it off! Weight reduction and maintenance are products of a prudent lifestyle rich in wise choices.

Tip #3 Water

Drink plenty of water. Water helps your body to burn calories and may even suppress the appetite to a certain degree. It helps to rid the body of sodium and can decrease bloating or fluid retention. Water also helps to eliminate toxins from the body and regulate your colon to prevent constipation. The use of a probiotics and digestive enzymes will also aid this process of cleansing and regulation.

Tip # 4 Foods to Improve Your Metabolism

Choose food which improve your metabolism to help you burn more calories. Such foods include: Green tea, grapefruits, apples, pears, and plain yogurt. Lean meats, especilly turkey will increase your metabolism. It take more calories for your body to digest proteins.

Tip #4 Increase Your Fiber

Eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. These foods tend to be rich in fiber and minimize the rise of insulin and cortisol in your body. This will lead to less fat storage, especially on the belly and and thighs. Fiber rich foods will minimize the sharp sugar rise after eating. This in turn will lead to less insulin and cortisol production by the body.

Tip #5 Eat Less Calorie Dense Foods

Eat foods that are filling but less calorie dense. Foods such as soup which contain liquid and food is filling and tend to be less calorie dense. High water content fruits are filling, decrease the craving for carbohydrates and are less calorie dense.

Tip #6 Minimize Fried Foods

Minimize fried foods, especially carbohydrates or breaded foods. Don’t spoil foods such as cheese or vegetables by breading them and frying them. Eat fried foods no more than every 7 to 10 days. Eat boiled eggs instead of fried. Eat baked, grilled or barbecue chicken instead.

Tip #7 Eat More

Eat more. What? Yes, I said eat more. Eat 4 to 5 meals per day. Making wise choices does not mean you starve yourself, skip meals or stay hungry. If you skip meals or eat 1 or 2 meals per day, your body will adjust and lower the metabolic rate. Eat until you are satisfied but never full and never overeat. This will just sharply raise insulin and cortisol levels which can lead to more fat storage.

Tip #8 Don’t Give Up Potatoes, Rice or Pasta

Don’t give up rice, potatoes or pasta. It’s all about balance. Have truly one serving if you eat these foods. However, if you are having a baked potato, skip the rice or pasta. Portion control in other words is key. The biggest mistake is not in eating these foods but in eating them in multiple combinations with multiple servings. Your plate should be colorful. In other words, most of the items on your plate should be vegetables and fruits.

Tip #9 Avoid High Protein Diets

High protein diets are difficult and unreasonable to maintain. These diets stress the kidneys due to the large protein load. What sense does it make to have cheese and meat for breakfast? Your body needs carbohydrates for quick energy and to maintain the nerves and other critical cells of the body. Again, portion control is key, not elimination. If you are a body builder or athlete do not take more than one protein shake per day when eating a regular diet. Take digestive enzymes with protein digesting enzymes (proteases) to minimize the stress on the body, especially the kidneys.

Tip #10 Keep the Body Guessing

The body will set its metabolic rate based on the pattern of foods eaten and the number of meals. So, vary the diet. Eat more fruits today but eat more protein tomorrow. If medically possible, take 1 to 2 days per month and eat just fruits for the first two meals to cleanse the system and keep the body guessing. For lunch, try eating all vegetables and eliminate the meat one or two days per week. Eat one serving of nuts 3 times per week. Almonds are one of the best choices. Use unsalted or lightly salted nuts to avoid fluid retention and increasing your blood pressure.

Stress, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and a fast-paced lifestyle are all factors in our lives that rob some of us of the vibrant and healthy life we all deserve. These factors can lead to poor eating habits that rob us of the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other nutrients we need. Most of us will need a dietary supplement or supplements to enhance our nutritional needs. We need supplements rich in antioxidants, plant adaptogens, vitamins and essential minerals. Women should be especially careful they do not succumb to osteoporosis by not excercising and ingesting enough vitamin D and calcium / coral calcium. Dietary supplements that boost the immune system are also key. Vegetarians and others make sure your b12 level is checked by your doctor. Supplement to get your vitamin b12 level opitmal. Everyone should exercise and drink plenty of pure water to rid the body of toxins and flush the kidneys and bladder and to lessen the risk of osteoporosis and heart disease. A diet scant in fried foods and rich in omega 3 fatty acids is essential as well. Avoid polished or processed foods as much as possible. Eat as many whole foods as possible.

Increasing your activity level will boost your metabolic rate. To lose weight, decrease calories consumed and/or increase calories used by about 500 calories per day.

Seventh-day Adventists Live Longer!

Want to live longer?

Consider these facts:

  • Male Seventh-day Adventists have an 8.9-year longer average life expectancy than does the general population, while female members have a 7.5-year longer average life expectancy.

  • Vegetarian Seventh-day Adventists have a reduced risk of osteoporosis when compared to meat-eaters in the general population. This probably has something to do with the fact that the excess protein in a high-meat diet causes the excretion of calcium in the urine. The SDA diet is both richer in calcium and lower in protein than the average American diet.

  • Seventh-day Adventists have a lower incidence of breast, prostate, pancreatic, bladder and ovarian cancers than does the general population. Vegetarian Seventh-day Adventist are one-half as likely as people in the general population to get colon or rectal cancer.

  • Non-vegetarian male Adventists have 56 percent of the expected coronary heart disease mortality. (This means the rate of heart disease in these Adventists is 56 percent of the rate in the general American population). The heart disease mortality rate for lacto-ovo vegetarian men is 39 percent, while vegetarian male Adventists who use no meat, milk or eggs (total vegetarians) have an expected coronary heart disease mortality rate that is only 12 percent of that of the general population!

Weight Loss - What Is SlenderWize?

 By Orville Campbell, MD

Dr. Orville Campbell is a Medical Doctor who was trained in Internal Medicine, nephrology and Hypertension at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He has been in private practice for almost 13 years. Areas of expertise include Hypertension, Diabetes, Chronic Kidney Diseases, Dialysis, Vitamin D Metabolism, Anemia, and Health and Wellness.

Let’s face it; there is no quick fix for weight loss (outside of surgery). No matter what method you use to lose weight, you must decrease your intake of calories to lose weight and to maintain your new weight. Effectively managing your weight is an issue of a lifestyle of prudent or healthy choices, including an increase in physical activity. Even if you go the surgical route, lifestyle management is still the long-term solution. In practice I have seen individuals who have sudden and effective weight loss with bypass or stomach stapling surgeries. However, the patients who go back to their poor dietary choices eventually gain wait in excess of their ideal body weight or re-gain a great percentage of their previous weight that they had lost.

To effectively lose weight, one may choose natural products or supplements which may help to support the body and its metabolism to help make losing weight more favorable. Weight loss enhancers or supplements are not magic potions. You have to do your part. Supplements usually work by increasing the body’s metabolism, therefore increasing the rate at which your body burns fat. However, when you use supplements, do not use supplements with ephedra. Ephedra can be a potent stimulant to the heart and nervous system and can speed up the heart rate. If you have heart disease (especially coronary artery disease), stimulating the heart can be deadly.

One promising natural supplement that I have seen is SlenderWize. This product is made by a company by the name of Cyberwize. This supplement is ephedra free. It is rich in B6, B12, Vitamin C, Niacin, and Folic acid (folate). SlenderWize also contains Grape seed extract, Green tea extract, Ginko Biloba extract, Ginger root extract, L-Tyrosine and many other nutrients. Slenderwize has more than 20 nutrients. It also contains some caffeine and theophylline. As with any supplement, consult with your health care provider to see if any supplement is right for you. Getting medical consultation is especially prudent if you are taking prescribed medicines or have high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, etc.

Weight loss is difficult for most people. Although losing weight is difficult, it’s not complex. You can lose weight by either decreasing input (Calories) and or increasing output. Increasing output involves either exercise or speeding up the body’s metabolism (supplements, exercise as well). Please check with your healthcare provider before starting an exercise program or using any weight loss enhancers such as supplements.

High Blood Pressure: Critical Facts About A Slilent Killer, Part 1

Nutrition Supplements    Body Care Products    Water Filters

High Blood Pressure: Critical Facts About a Silent Killer

High blood pressure (hypertension) is indeed a silent killer. In a significant number of cases there are no symptoms until you end up with a stroke, heart attack, eye disease which may lead to blindness, or even chronic kidney disease leading to dialysis. Know the Critical Facts. Do you know what your blood pressure is or even what your creatinine is? High blood pressure can be present for years without any signs or symptoms.

What is Normal Blood pressure?

Normal blood pressure is considered less than 130/80. The top number is referred to as the systolic pressure (when the heart pumps) and the bottom number is referred to as the diastolic pressure (when the heart relaxes). Regardless of which number is elevated, each carries the same risk for bad outcomes.

Who is at risk for High Blood Pressure?

There are several major risk factors: Being obese or over your ideal body weight; high stress lifestyle; eating a diet high in sodium or salt, a lifestyle which lacks exercise, chronic (ongoing) kidney disease, and a family history of high blood pressure.

Bad Effects of High Blood Pressure

1. Damage to the retina (back of the eyeball) which can lead to decreased vision or even blindness.

2. Stroke

Stroke may result from damage to blood vessels in the brain. These blood vessels can burst and cause death.

3. Kidney damage leading to chronic kidney disease

Chronic kidney disease can lead to such a significant loss of kidney function (ESRD or End Stage Renal Disease) that one may need dialysis. High blood pressure is the number two reason why patients require dialysis in the United States. Diabetes is the number one cause. Early signs of kidney damage may be manifested as a small amount of protein in the urine or slight elevation of the blood level of creatinine. The creatinine level in the blood is a major way by which we measure the kidney function. The higher the level the worse the function. The kidney function (sometimes referred to as the GFR) can be calculated using an individual’s age, sex, race and weight. Another sign may be blood in the urine (hematuria).

4. Enlarged heart

If blood pressure remains uncontrolled, the heart has to pump against these high pressures and become enlarged. The heart can be become so enlarged that this ballooning process may become irreversible. Heart failure may result. There is a high death (mortality) rate amongst people with heart failure.

5. Aneurysms

An aneurysm is a ballooning or bulge in a blood vessel (an artery). An aneurysm can burst and can cause death or stroke. These aneurysms can be in the brain, abdomen, chest, and other parts of the body.

Symptoms

Although in a significant number of cases there are no symptoms, here are some which some persons might experience: headache, hearing or feeling your pulse in your head, feeling tired, nausea, dizziness, chest pain or even tightness, and poor exercise tolerance.

Free Radical Production

High blood pressure (just like diabetes and obesity) can cause increased production of free radicals. Free radicals are damaging particles produced in your body by or as a result of certain disease states. Taking antioxidants (neutralizers of free radicals) can place the body in a better position to fight disease states and strengthen the immune system.

Coral Calcium - Get Some Today!

In a study by Ishitani and others (J Nutr Sci Vitminol. 1999; 45(5):509-17), one group of patients were fed crackers with powdered calcium carbonate from a non-coral source and the other group powdered coral calcium carbonate. There was a significant difference between the absorption of calcium between the two groups. The coral calcium group had superior absorption.

Coral Calcium usually have trace minerals which may contribute to absorption. Be careful of how your coral calcium is harvested. Make sure it comes from a reputable company and is certified pure from harmful contaminants.

Animal studies have shown enhanced bone growth at injuried site (peridontal) when that tissue is implanted with calcium from a coral source. J Clin Periodontol. 2005; 32(1):104-10. So, not all calcium supplements are created equally.

So don’t be fooled! There are varying quality of calcium supplements based on the form of calcium and calcium content. Always read the labels and ask questions. Again, look for not only the form of calcium but the source of the calcium. For example, people who are on dialysis and use a calcium product to neutralize excess phosphorous should use calcium acetate, not carbonate. The reason for this is that calcium acetate is not as bioavailable or absorbed. That’s why kidney patients use the acetate because they are usually calcium overloaded.

A final word: If you are vitamin D deficient, your body will not efficiently absorb calcium. You need adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D in addition to a healthy liver and kidneys. Ask your healthcare provider to see if you need to have your vitamin D levels assessed.

What is Normal Blood Pressure?

Blood pressure should be <130/80. This is imperative as Hypertension is the number 2 reason why people end up on dialysis in the US. Diabetes is the number 1 reason people end up on Dialysis.

Is Your Diabetes Controlled?

For diabetics you should always know what is the value of your sugar control number. Your sugar control number is called hemoglobin A1c (or glycohemoglobin). This is the percentage of your red blood cells that are attached to sugar. This number should be <7%. The closer to 6.5% the better. As this number climbs over 7, kidney (nephropathy), nerve damage (neuropathy), and eye damage (retinopathy) become more apparent.

Top 5 Things Your Kidneys Do For You!

Most people feel all the kidneys do is to help you urinate. However, here are the top 5 functions of your kidneys: 1) Help to rid the body of Poisons in the urine; 2) Help to regulate your Blood Pressure; 3) Activate the Vitamin D in your body to put it in usable form; 4) Help you to make blood by making a hormone called erythropoietin which sends a message to the bone marrow to make blood; and 5) Help you regulate your water balance to prevent you from getting dehydrated or going into heart failure!
